Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about choosing, ordering, and replacing gas struts with Struxa.
01 How long do gas struts typically last?
Most gas struts perform well for around 3-5 years before the internal pressure starts to drop, though this varies a lot with usage and environment. Struts on trade vehicles, canopies, and setups that see daily use, dust, or extreme temperatures tend to wear out faster than ones in light, occasional use. We stock common strut sizes and pressurise each one in-house to suit the listing, so what you receive is built to the spec on the page and to hold up under real Australian conditions.
02 How can I tell if my strut needs replacing?
The tell-tale signs are a lid or hatch that won't stay open on its own, one that slams shut or slowly sinks down, visible oil residue around the shaft, or a hissing sound when it's compressed. Any of these usually means the gas charge has dropped or the seal has failed, and it's time for a replacement rather than a temporary fix.
03 How do I remove my old gas strut and fit a new one?
Most Struxa end fittings clip onto a ball stud, held in place by a small spring clip on the back of the socket. Removing the old one takes a flathead screwdriver to pop the clip open; fitting the new one is even easier - it just pushes on and the clip locks itself. Steps for both are below.
04 Is a "gas strut" the same as a "gas spring" or "gas stay"?
Yes - these are just different names used across the industry for the same product: a gas-filled cylinder that holds up a hatch, canopy, boot lid, or toolbox lid. Whichever term you know it by, if you're after a replacement or a custom build, you're in the right place.
05 How do I find the exact right strut for my vehicle or application?
You've got three ways to find it: scan the label on your existing strut with our Label Scanner and we'll match it instantly, search by make and model in our Vehicle Strut Store, or browse our All Gas Struts range to find a standard size that fits, including canopies, toolboxes, trailers, or anything outside a standard vehicle fitment.
06 How is "Installation Length" measured?
Installation Length is measured from the centre of one end fitting to the centre of the other, with the strut fully extended. Getting this measurement right is the single most important thing for a correct fit, so if you're at all unsure, our Label Scanner or the All Gas Struts range can help confirm it before you order.
07 What if the length I need isn't a standard size, or is currently out of stock?
If a size shows as out of stock, use the Notify Me button on that size and we'll email you the moment it's back in stock. If you need something outside our standard range altogether, use the "Need a Different Length?" form on our All Gas Struts page - tell us the shaft diameter and length you're after. We keep a list of what people ask for, and if that size comes into stock we'll email you.
08 What's covered under warranty, and how do returns work?
Every strut we supply is covered for 12 months against manufacturing faults, on top of your rights under the Australian Consumer Law. If our rego lookup or label scanner told you which strut to buy and it doesn't fit, that is a Fit Assurance claim, not a measurement error. An exact OEM match that doesn't fit is replaced free. That is the only thing Fit Assurance covers. Anything short of an exact match - a partial match, or a strut you picked yourself - is pressurised to the specification you gave us, so it can't go back on the shelf and isn't returnable. We don't accept change-of-mind returns either, so it pays to double-check your Installation Length before ordering. If an item arrives damaged, contact us within 7 days of delivery with photos. For operational faults, any time inside the 12-month window. Full details are in our Refund Policy.
